The filter chamber of the plate-and-frame filter press consists of a flat filter plate and a hollow filter frame. The filter cloth is fixed on the plate frame. This is the early main filter press form, while the filter chamber of the box-type filter press is composed of two adjacent recessed filter plates. The main advantage is that it is convenient to replace the filter cloth. The disadvantages are low efficiency, poor filtering effect and easy damage of the filter plate.

Plate and frame filter press is first applied to chemical dehydration machinery. Although the plate and frame filter press is generally intermittent operation, large investment in infrastructure equipment and low filtration capacity, it is still widely used in some small sewage plants because of its advantages such as large filtration driving force, high solid content of filter cake, high filtrate clarity, high solid recovery rate and low consumption of conditioning drugs.
